How to Get Rid of Pollutants that Cause Asthma
Did you know that if you or your children have asthma it might be caused by some of the things that are in your home? For example, air fresheners, bug killers, household cleaners, and pet treatments can irritate your lungs, your kid's lungs, and your baby's lungs.
However, there are less toxic alternatives available - and they are usually quite a bit more affordable as well.
For example, for a lot of things you can try replacing your chlorine bleach with vinegar. And, instead of buying some chemical laden products to scrub your tiles, you can use baking soda instead.
Are you trying to get a stubborn stain out of a garment? The odds are that hydrogen peroxide will do the job as well as any toxic laden chemical product you might buy.
The dust in your home contains a lot of contaminants. You should use a wet rag or a wet mop along with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter in order to get rid of the dust.
In addition, you may want to follow the Hawaiian custom of leaving your shoes outside your door. That's because if you wear them in your home you will track outside pollutants inside your house.
As you might know, some of the plastics that you use could contain toxic chemicals such as phthalates and BPA. Therefore you should not reuse any single-use containers nor should you microwave any food in plastic containers.
You can use a shower curtain made out of a natural fabric in order to avoid using a curtain that contains PVC. And, if you are going to remodel your home, make sure that your contractor uses PVC-free pipes and flooring.
Groups and Organizations
In addition to keeping your home free from pollutants you can help to organize a group in your community. Your group will get together to clean up your parks, beach, local streams, and highways.
However, if you'd rather join an environmentally conscious group rather than form a new one you can go to volunteermatch.org where you will find community service groups close to where you live.
In addition, you can search the Internet for the American Hiking Society. This organization promotes hiking and aims to protect foot trails and the hiking experience.
If you're not much into joining a large formalized organization and would prefer to get together with a small group of your friends you will probably like this idea. Why not put together a small tree-planting group?
Your group's goal and commitment would be to plant and maintain an agreed upon number of trees over the course of your lives.
Then you could plan regular get-togethers where you can plant trees and water the trees that you've already planted. If you want to let the world know what you're doing just search for the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign and make your commitments known to the world.
