Babies and toddlers love to learn - a baby's brain is designed for learning, they do this through play, exploring the world around them, listening, tasting, touching and feeling objects, seeing and smelling sensations, each waking minute they are absorbing information and building their knowledge and experience making them the best students in the world. The early years of learning for your baby are faster and more effortless than at any other point in their lives.

There's plenty you can do to engage your baby's brain, interacting with them as much as possible, creating that special bond, talking, reading and singing, along with the essential hugs, kisses and cuddles. Spend time playing, following their lead when they are old enough to show you what interests them. It is so important to enjoy this special time with your baby as it will pass all too quickly!

Playtime can be packed with learning, parents obviously have an important role in determining how much and how easily babies learn. Pretend play or role play toys are great fun, letting creative minds expand, with the huge range of stimulating toys on the market that both entertain and educate, create curiosity and a desire to learn. Toy kitchens, shops, train sets or doctors and nurses, the limits are endless with a young imagination. Traditional wooden toys always have a place in our hearts as a great place to start, building blocks, an abacus, wooden dolls house, or a rocking horse, there's something warm and nostalgic about a tactile wooden toy.

The younger you start, the easier it is to learn, children and babies are like sponges, thriving on information. Getting to grips with your language from birth and constantly being exposed to people speaking, guarantees your in depth understanding and fluency, likewise, other skills such as reading, mathematics or music, if you begin early enough you will have a much deeper in-built knowledge.

Teaching should never be forced, regular play and practice is essential, giving your children the opportunity to explore the wide world around them, touch objects and understand the laws of nature. So many toys directly help with literacy and numeracy, such as magnets and shapes, or geography with world jigsaws and pretend play toys such as shops and kitchens are great for building their vocabulary. It's a fine balance between finding toys and methods to promote the development of babies and teach toddlers while still having fun.
