These creatures which eat wood do not really differentiate between wood found outside and furniture which may be quite special to us. Indeed, whenever or whatever they come across is just fair game for them. Even prized trees can be weakened to the point where they have to be taken down before they fall down so do not take these tiny nuisances lightly.
Within most homes too will be a pet or two and these animals can bring in fleas and ticks from the garden. If there is wall to wall carpet in the home, the eggs from fleas can exist for up to several months without anything happening to them. However, once the surroundings are ok for them, out they come and the life cycle will start over again.
Those that let animals jump up on the sofa are also likely to be bitten by fleas when they settle down for an hour or two watching TV or reading a book. The first that anyone will know that they have unwanted visitors are when they find themselves with bite marks which itch terribly. These fleas need blood to trigger the egg-laying cycle so they do not really mind if it comes from an animal or human being.
Of course, those who want to keep them out of the house will need to call in the experts to spray but there are some things that they can do to cut down on the instances of bites. First, stop the animals jumping up onto the furniture and keep the carpets and furniture well vacuumed. Treat the pets for fleas and such with shampoos or powder treatments and keep a flea collar on them too. When vacuuming, put a flea collar in the dust bag so that any stray eggs or fleas are killed off. When disposing of the dust, try to put it where there is fire to kill them off.
Lastly, bed bugs are making a comeback in the US and this is becoming an epidemic. People who are traveling are carrying them to their homes in their luggage so it may be a good idea to unpack outside and put everything in the washing machine immediately. Spray your luggage as well but, most importantly, get the experts to come to spray the house.
