The blue-green colour of turquoise is a soothing and healing colour reminiscent of tropical seas.
Turquoise is a soft and porous stone and is mined in many places, including the USA, Egypt, Mexico, China, Tibet, Iran, Peru, Poland and Russia.
This protective and healing stone can dispel negative energy and balance and can calm emotions. It can be used to refresh the tired, downcast or exhausted.
Colour therapy can be used in both business and personal settings and turquoise is a particularly good colour for communicating from the heart. Different businesses, depending on their nature, can use the colour on stationery or in the office to send out a subtle message about the company's character and quality.
Turquoise can be used around the home in a variety of ways. Filling a water fountain with a variety of stones including turquoise can increase harmony in the home, combining the soothing sound of running water with the power of the stones themselves.
Placing turquoise on the soil beside a plant that has suffered from a disease can help it to recover.
A blue stone, such as turquoise placed in a child's bedroom, or even using the colour on the walls, can quieten a child's mind. It can remove pollutants and equalise a room's energies and therefore can also be placed in a bathroom, especially if you use your bathroom as a sanctuary and a place to relax and destress.
Stones used in healing are believed generally to absorb the negative energy their specific properties deal with and if they have been used for healing they should be regularly held under running water to cleanse them of the negative energies they have absorbed.
Turquoise jewellery looks especially good when set in silver and makes a special gift for anyone celebrating an anniversary. It is the stone associated with the 11th wedding anniversary, and also the stone for those with birthdays in December.
Turquoise necklaces or silver and turquoise bracelets look especially good set against tanned skin, but because this is a soft, porous stone it needs to be treated with care.
Its colour will fade if it is in the sun for too long and it is also vulnerable to oils and grease such as face cream or sun cream as the stone will absorb the oils and change colour.
Equally, it is wise to remove jewellery, especially turquoise, when swimming in a pool or in the sea because of the damage they can suffer from pool chemicals or salt. Chemicals used in housework may also damage the stones.
It should ideally be stored separately in a soft pouch to prevent damage and if set in silver the metal should be cleaned with a specialist silver cleaning cloth. It should never be cleaned using silver dip, as this is a strong acid and will damage the stone.
